Traditional Chinese Medicine Helps Children Too

Traditional Chinese medicine has been shown to help children suffering from chronic stomach and intestine problems, said the Baptist University’s School of Chinese Medicine. Tui na, a traditional Chinese form of massage therapy, was used on a group of  66 patients (all children). The group was observed over a period of two years. Sixty-five of the children showed significant improvement with their stomach problems, while forty-five of them completely recovered.  “There are many side illnesses that come with functional disorders in the spleen and stomach. Many parents think their children eat too slowly, are too skinny or easy to get sick […]

SPICING IT UP FOR HEART HEALTH

Every month should be Heart Health month. This one little muscle has an immense amount of authority over our lives ~ physiologically AND in the arena of mind + spirit.  Chinese Medicine views the heart as the “Emperor” organ of our “Shen”, which influences our spirit, sleep and mood states.  Courage, comes from the Latin “coeur/heart”, which Brené Brown of “Daring Greatly” fame suggests means “to tell the story of who you are with your whole heart.”  By the time we’re 80 years old, this courageous + mighty muscle will have beaten nearly three and a half billion times (3,363,840,000). Holistic Approaches to A Good Night’s Sleep

Does this sound like you?   “I used to be a great sleeper.  Now I wake up several times a night and never get a solid 8 hrs of sleep.  I fall asleep quickly when I first go to bed and also after waking up each time but waking up about every 2 hours certainly is counterproductive to getting a good night’s sleep!  I don’t want to take sleeping pills. I take melatonin, 5HTP, B vitamins with minerals, & calming teas as sleep aids.   Could you give us your thoughts on getting a good night’s sleep when over 50.”  ~ […]

Holidays Are Here Again: A Season of Joy, Stress, Grief and the Common Cold

While we welcome this season of joy and light, may we also acknowledge and welcome their shadow partners of grief and darkness.  This is life’s yin/yang balance. My husband summarizes our human experience as ” joy, pain, sunshine and rain” … or maybe it was the Dalai Lama. For many the holidays are full of good cheer, Hannukah lights, Christmas decorations, social gatherings and more sweets than we can imagine (January Cleanse anyone?! It starts January 7th, 2015!). For others, the holidays are not so easy.  Many of us will be remembering those who have passed on, or who are suffering, which […]

Breast Health: Are you Dense?

It’s a good day when I read that mainstream medicine is recognizing what we integrationists have been saying for some time … the mammogram may not be the screening tool once thought – particularly for women with dense breast tissue.   You see, dense breast tissue is difficult to read as healthy tissue or tumorous tissue.  It can look the same to the reading radiologist.   This week’s New York Times article, Dense Breasts May Obscure Mammogram Results, does an excellent job of sharing these concerns as well as next steps for the women most effected. If you have dense […]

Adrenal Fatigue: The Effects of Stress + Cortisol Imbalance

Unlike our ancestors, we live with constant, low-grade stress. The list of challenges is endless: lack of sleep work demands job security and/or financial pressures personality conflicts yo-yo dieting death or illness of a loved one skipping meals reliance on stimulants like caffeine and carbs digestive problems over-exercise illness or infection unresolved emotional issues from our past or present and […]
